Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. XX4
Dogon horseman — Dogon, Mali — African tribal art — Ref. XX4
Description
This wooden Dogon horseman represents a figure mounted on a horse, holding what was probably a spear in his raised hand. The spear, now missing, probably symbolised power, bravery and the protective role of the horseman. In Dogon culture, horseman figures are often associated with chiefs or warriors and embody the strength and protection of the community. The spear adds a martial dimension and indicates that this horseman is not only a figure of authority but also a guardian and warrior.
The horseman, with his carefully carved beard, embodies wisdom and authority, evoking the image of a chief or venerated ancestor among the Dogon. His stylised and imposing beard accentuates his noble and timeless character, bearing witness to his spiritual status and protective power. His face has a serious and serene expression, marked by fine incisions probably symbolising scarifications or signs of rank. The rider’s torso is decorated with engraved diamond-shaped motifs, which may indicate armour or symbols of protection. His legs are firmly anchored on either side of the horse, demonstrating stability and complete control of his mount.
The horse is also stylised, with simple but expressive forms. The ears stand upright, and the head is decorated with raised motifs, perhaps to evoke harnessing or ceremonial ornaments. The mane and muzzle are carved in twisted forms, adding detail and reinforcing the sacred aspect of the animal. The horse itself is a powerful figure in Dogon iconography, symbolising spiritual mobility and the connection between the world of the living and that of the spirits.
The simple, thick raw wooden base anchors the sculpture, giving it a stable and timeless presence. This natural patina, marked by traces of wear and ageing, attests to the age of the piece and its probable use in rituals. Overall, this sculpture represents a true icon of spiritual and martial authority among the Dogon, where every detail, from the missing spear to the horse’s harness, contributes to a deep symbolic narrative.
