Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 86

Standing male statue — Fang, Gabon — African tribal art — Ref. 86

Description

This impressive wooden male figure, 48 cm high and weighing 4.7 kg, belongs to the sculptural tradition of the Fang people of Gabon. It embodies the aesthetic canons specific to this art: a rounded face with closed mouth, closed and elongated eyes, a stylised straight nose, and a large headdress falling symmetrically to the back.
The upright and hieratic posture of the statue, although less common than the kneeling positions of the famous byeri reliquary figures, evokes a form of ritual solemnity. The figure holds a cup or urn between his hands, an element often interpreted as a libation vessel or symbol of spiritual transmission. The powerful, spiral-shaped legs reveal advanced sculptural mastery, highlighting exaggerated musculature typical of certain Fang representations. The nudity of the body underlines ritual purity and bodily directness.
The surface shows a beautiful dark brown patina of age, with natural marks of wear compatible with ancient use. No metal addition or inlay is visible. The general state of preservation is very good despite some age-related splits.
