Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 36
Koranko mask, guardian of the sacred — Koranko, Guinea — African tribal art — Ref. 36
Description
Ritual mask of the Koranko ethnic group, originating from Guinea, used during initiatory ceremonies and protective rites. It embodies a mystical entity linked to the forces of nature and ancestral spirits. The stylised horns symbolise spiritual power and the authority of initiates.
Carved in dense wood, this mask presents a triangular structure marked by an imposing central relief, covered with cloths soaked in sacrificial substances. Engraved geometric motifs decorate the edges, reinforcing its sacred character. Lateral perforations were used to attach plant fibres or textiles to conceal the wearer during ceremonies.
