Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 42

Double-faced statue — Dan, Côte d’Ivoire — African tribal art — Ref. 42

Description

This Dan sculpture represents a man on one side and a woman on the other, embodying duality and balance between masculine and feminine forces. It was used in ritual contexts to symbolise complementarity and harmony within society, particularly during initiatory ceremonies or rites of passage.
Carved in dense wood with a fine patina of use, it is distinguished by expressive features and carefully worked geometric ornamentation on the base. Natural wear and the refinement of the execution testify to prolonged ritual use.
