Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 49
Dan — Dan, Côte d’Ivoire/Liberia — African tribal art — Ref. 49
Description
Carved wood, dark patina, adorned with plant fibres and metal elements. Elongated face with smooth and idealised features, half-closed almond-shaped eyes, finely carved nose and prominent slightly open mouth, typical of Deangle masks, associated with beauty and harmony. Elaborate headdress of braided fibres, decorated with cowries, metal pieces and a central red ornament, symbolising wealth and spiritual protection. Large collar of natural fibres, accompanied by metal bells, reinforcing the sonic aspect of the mask during ritual dances. Used in initiatory and festive ceremonies, this mask embodies a benevolent spirit intervening in the rituals of the Poro society.
