Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 82
Kneeling female statuette carrying a vessel — Bambara, Mali — African tribal art — Ref. 82
Unavailable
Description
This small bronze or brass statuette represents a kneeling woman holding a ritual bowl in front of her. Although the features recall Bambara statuary from Mali, several elements suggest Senufo influence, notably the crest hairstyle rounded toward the back, frequent among Senufo female figures. The face shows marked stylisation with almond-shaped eyes, a protruding mouth and a slender nose. The kneeling posture, the elongated neck and the outstretched arms holding the vessel evoke objects linked to domestic or divinatory cults.
