Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 130
Anthropomorphic lock — carved couple — Dogon, Mali — African tribal art — Ref. 130
Description
This piece comes from the Dogon people of Mali, known for their latch locks decorated with carved anthropomorphic or zoomorphic motifs. The couple represented symbolises the union of man and woman, a fundamental image in Dogon social organisation, where the complementarity of the sexes supports cosmic and community balance. These locks were not merely functional objects, but also symbols of protection and family identity, used to secure granaries and chests. The movable part is still present, although partially detached. The figures, with stylised faces and long arms brought back toward the sex, embody a sober but expressive aesthetic specific to ancient Dogon art. The hard, dark wood shows a beautiful patina of use and age, with original perforations probably intended for attachment to a support.
