Baga snake Bansonyi — Baga, Guinea — African tribal art — Ref. 159
Description
This Baga Bansonyi snake-shaped sculpture embodies the protective spirit a-Mantsho-ña-Tshol, essential in initiatory and protective rituals in Guinea. The piece is distinguished by its sinuous form, carefully painted geometric motifs in red, white and black, and inlaid details such as metal elements on the body. The back has a central groove defining the structure of the snake, and the whole reveals a marked patina of use. This Bansonyi reflects the full richness and symbolism of Baga ritual art.
