Dogon “Kora player” statue — Dogon, Mali — African tribal art — Ref. 166
Description
Originating from the Dogon people of Mali, this wooden statue represents a kora player, an emblematic instrument of West Africa, often associated with griots and oral traditions. In Dogon cosmogony, music plays an essential role in rituals and the transmission of knowledge.
The work presents a slender figure wearing a conical hat, seated and holding a finely carved kora with a hollow calabash serving as a resonating chamber. The features are stylised, typical of Dogon aesthetics, and the wood bears marks of age, suggesting ritual or ceremonial use.
