Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 209
Dogon ritual statuette — invocation of spirits and rain — Dogon, Mali — African tribal art — Ref. 209
Description
Rare wooden Dogon sculpture, probably used in rituals invoking spirits and rain. This remarkable piece presents a vertical structure with superimposed figures, evoking the connection between the earthly world and spiritual forces. The kneeling posture and openwork saw-tooth crest are characteristic elements of Dogon representations linked to the Nommo, ancestral beings who protect humanity and are connected with water and fertility.
The wood has a fine natural patina, testifying to prolonged ritual use. Certain losses and cracks attest to its age.
