Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 214
Female statue — Dogon, Mali — African tribal art — Ref. 214
Description
This Dogon female statue from Mali illustrates the stylistic canons specific to this people, notably the conical breasts placed very high and the elongated silhouette. It is distinguished by its angular face with stylised features, an arrow-shaped nose and pronounced lips, characteristic of Dogon sculptures in the Wakara style.
Dogon female statues play an important role in ritual practices, often associated with fertility, maternity and the transmission of spiritual values. Their presence in family sanctuaries and altars dedicated to ancestors underlines their protective function and their role in perpetuating social harmony.
Carved from hard wood with an old patina, this piece shows natural wear and age cracks that reinforce its authenticity. The attention given to details, notably the upright posture and the arms elongated along the body, supports the attribution to Dogon art.
