Anthropomorphic ceremonial spoon — Dan, Côte d’Ivoire — African tribal art — Ref. 220

Description

A prestigious ritual object used by the Dan in Côte d’Ivoire, this anthropomorphic spoon embodies abundance and hospitality. Given to the most generous and influential women of the village, it symbolises their role in the redistribution of resources. Carved in wood patinated by use, this piece bears a finely detailed head, topped with carefully engraved braids evoking the aesthetic canons of the ethnic group. The large bowl, decorated with incisions on the reverse, shows prolonged use. Visible restorations testify to its age. Its refined style and deep patina date it to the early to mid-20th century.
