Description
This carved wooden statue comes from the Dogon of Mali, a people known for their refined art and symbolic sculptures. Dogon statues are often associated with ancestral cults and protective rites.
Representing a seated male figure in a posture of meditation or contemplation, the statue has a long stylised beard, elongated arms and a slender torso. These characteristic features evoke a figure of a sage or venerated ancestor, whose posture conveys the transmission of knowledge and the link with the spiritual world.
The wood, patinated by time, shows traces of use and beautiful wear that attest to its age. The sculpture is finely executed, with subtle details on the face and arms, as well as a base that reinforces its balance and stability.
