Malinké forge bellows — Malinké, Mali — African tribal art — Ref. 239
Description
Originating from Mali, this forge bellows is attributed to the Malinké, peoples among whom metallurgy holds a central place. Used by blacksmiths, it served to activate the fire for working iron and copper, essential for the production of tools and weapons. The forge has a spiritual dimension, blacksmiths being perceived as masters of fire and intermediaries between humans and mystical forces. The object consists of two chambers hollowed from solid wood, connected to metal tubes to direct air toward the hearth. Old repairs and a fine patina of use confirm its authenticity and prolonged use.
