Baga mask — Baga, Guinea — African tribal art — Ref. 270

Description
This piece comes from the Baga of Guinea, a people renowned for their highly expressive ritual masks and sculptures. Used in initiatory ceremonies and rituals connected with fertility and protection, this mask embodies an ancestral spirit or protective entity. Baga masks are distinguished by their stylised forms and exaggerated proportions, often associated with totemic and spiritual figures.
Carved in dense wood, this 73 cm high work presents a long angular face with minimalist features, surmounted by a geometric head evoking a protective spirit. The twisted structure of the body, with raised motifs and a slender base, reflects the influence of spiral forms symbolising the link between the spiritual and earthly worlds.
