Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 303
Toma mask — Toma, Guinea — African tribal art — Ref. 303
Description
This type of mask is characterised by its elongated rectangular form, prominent carved horns and central crest topped with a “V”-shaped motif. The motifs engraved on the upper part, often geometric or representing plant patterns, symbolise the cultural and spiritual identity of the group. These masks, worn during ritual dances or initiatory ceremonies, serve to invoke protective spirits, mark passages between different social statuses or exorcise harmful spirits. The dark patina and traces of wear suggest prolonged and authentic use in a ritual context.
