Mémoire d’Afrique — Ref. 318
Traditional stool — anthropomorphic figures with raised arms — Dogon, Mali — African tribal art — Ref. 318
Description
This wooden Dogon stool is carved from a single massive block. It rests on a circular base supported by a series of anthropomorphic figures with raised arms, typical of Dogon iconography. These figures symbolise ancestors or protective spirits, often invoked to guarantee the stability and legitimacy of power. Used by notables during councils or in sanctuaries, this type of seat embodies spiritual and social authority in Dogon cosmogony. The geometric motifs engraved on the upper band complete the sacred aspect of the object. The old, thick wood shows a beautiful natural patina of use, with many splits due to age and a significant chip on one half of the seat, making the object incomplete but still legible. No modern addition or visible restoration.
