Description

Originating from the highlands of Mali, this wooden funerary stele is a Dogon creation representing a mythological or ancestral figure. It measures approximately 120 cm and has a slightly discoloured base, testifying to its former anchoring in the earth, which confirms that it was initially erected to mark a sacred or funerary site. The elongated head, stylised with a prominent chin and minimalist features, is typical of Dogon figures, often associated with the “Nommo”, protective ancestral spirits in Dogon cosmology. This twisted and slender figure, with its dynamic posture, symbolises the connection between the earthly world and the spiritual world.
The wood, showing cracks and a natural patina, testifies to its age and prolonged exposure to the elements. Its raw surface, marked by different shades of brown, reflects intensive ritual use and its role in ceremonies commemorating the ancestors, thus reinforcing its authenticity and spiritual charge. The arms, decorated with ring motifs, recall ritual bracelets, while the elongated body with carved curves may symbolise the fluidity of the spirit in transition toward the beyond.
This stele was not only a commemorative monument, but also an anchoring point for the vital force, or “nyama”, allowing the living to communicate with the ancestors and benefit from their protection. It may have been erected in a place of contemplation or a funerary sanctuary to honour and preserve the spirit of the deceased. The lying position of the piece, which no longer stands upright today, is explained by the wear and fragility acquired over time, but its symbolism remains intact.
The stele shows cracks caused by natural drying and a dark brown patina marked by residues. Despite these signs of wear, it retains a strong and evocative presence, adding to its unique character.
