Description

Originating from Mali, this wooden Dogon funerary stele represents a mythological figure or venerated ancestor, characteristic of Dogon spiritual art. Measuring approximately 120 cm, this piece shows clear signs of wear, notably the absence of foot and base, indicating that it has suffered the effects of time and the elements. The elongated head, with minimalist features and a prominent chin, is typical of Dogon representations, often associated with the “Nommo”, mythological entities symbolising the connection between the world of the living and that of the spirits.
The body is marked by deep cracks and a dark brown patina, testifying to prolonged exposure. The natural twisting of the silhouette and the arms decorated with circular motifs recall Dogon ritual ornaments, giving the figure a mystical and spiritual appearance. Despite its worn condition, the stele retains powerful symbolism, having probably been used in funerary rituals to mark the memory of the ancestors and serve as a spiritual intermediary.
This piece, formerly erected in the earth to anchor the spirit of the ancestor in sacred ground, has now lost its base, but its presence and cultural importance remain intact. It embodies the essence of Dogon funerary rituals, in which funerary steles served as points of spiritual connection to ensure the protection of the deceased and maintain their beneficial influence on the community.
